“‘I am about to buy a house in a foreign country,’ I wrote as I began my memoir Under the Tuscan Sun. A simple declarative sentence – but for me, crux and crucible. From such easy words, fate branches and transforms…”
So begins Every Day In Tuscany; from the woman who “singlehandedly started the travel-memoir craze” (Library Journal) and whose newest memoir has been called “affectionate and warm…celebrates the lush abundance and charm of daily life in the Italian countryside” (Publishers Weekly). It’s sure to please fans of Under the Tuscan Sun and newcomers alike.
As a writer of memoir, Frances Mayes says she has discovered that “who you are is where you are.” Here’s more from her recent essay, “Why I Write” from Publishers Weekly:
“Neruda claimed there are only 11 subjects to write about. He doesn’t say what they are, but one of them must be happiness. For a writer, the subject is hard to sustain. How to write a book that has no plot, an unforeseeable resolution, and not even an ‘I survived’ motif? Well, I thought, let’s just go a little against the grain. I quit worrying about conflict/resolution requirements. I’ll try, I told myself, to re-create this place in tactile, evocative words. Try to catch elusive and fragile happiness in images. But I moved into memoir when I felt myself begin to be changed by the place.” (Read the whole article on Publishers Weekly.)

Italy is just huge what comes to regional diversity in cuisine. What I know would be the Southern dishes, and Tuscany (or ‘continental’ Italy) is quite different. And the same comes to other parts of culture – and I like seeing places thru the eyes of people who love the place they write about.
I loved Under the Tuscan Sun and can’t wait for new book Everyday In Tuscany. Can’t wait to see her in the St.Louis area for a signing.
I loved Under the Tuscan Sun and can’t wait for the next book Everyday in Tuscany. I hope that there is an appearance in the St.Louis area.

I have loved learning about Tuscany with you. You have made me believe that real change is possible for my life. Thank you
This sounds lovely! While I am not yet at a place in my life that I can travel as I wish, I traveled often as a child of military parents. I can dream and plan all the trips I want to make, and while Ireland will be one, my ancestors come from around Firenze, so Italy will be one as well!!!

Congratulations Mrs. Mayes on your delightful ‘Evey Day in Tuscany’. When I went to a bookstore the other day to get inspiration for a project I have become involved with, as soon as I walked in my eyes went straight to ‘Every Day’ My husband has purchased lots in my hometown in N.C., in a development that has a ‘mediterranean’ theme. Three months ago when I saw it I repled, ‘the surrounding area looks tuscan and we should try to bring in that influence.” Imagine my surprise as I was reading your book yesterday when I came across your idea about Montelauro.
The biggest challenge to build in the Tuscan style as you are most aware, is the price point. The market for the area is around $225,000.00. At that amount, it is almost impossible. Still, I have spent hours researching and making suggestions. I want so badly to give a much more creative and thoughtful product than what is the usual in that range because of my love for the area and the people. We spend a part of every month there, year-round, because of my passion for the seasons.
Thank you for your glorious inspiration and the pleasures that you bring to so many folks.
