Book Group of the Month

The best part about our book club is the food. Okay, truly it’s the friendship. We were all friends before the club – I don’t remember who suggested we start meeting every month to discuss a new book. But I always look forward to getting together with the girls, sharing our thoughts, and enjoying good food and wine….Thanks to my book club, I’ve traveled the world with food. We always meet at each other’s apartments or Central Park (in the summer months) and each member is tasked with bringing a food from a place or theme in the book.

We are all avid readers; one of the things we love about the group is that it pushes us to read things we might not otherwise choose on our own. According to several members of the group, that is part of our “mission.” The books we’ve read have introduced us to new cultures, faiths, and experiences. We like to read about families, relationships, and finding meaning in life through the book. What can the characters’ experiences teach us about our own lives?

Chances are, you’ve read one (or more) books Oprah Winfrey has recommended on her show over the years. And chances are, you’ve heard about Kitty Kelley’s just-released biography of Oprah. We want to hear what you think of Oprah’s Book Club picks. Do you have any favorites? Does your book club read them? Why or why not? How would you describe Oprah’s taste in fiction? Post a comment and enter to win a copy of Kitty Kelley’s Oprah. Your book group could be featured in an upcoming issue of Read It Forward!

Thanks to all of you who shared your book group stories last month! We love hearing about what you read and what makes for great discussion. This month, we’re kicking off a new Read It Forward feature. In every issue, we’ll ask you to respond to a question about book groups, and one lucky winner will win advance reader’s copies for your entire group: you’ll get to read a great new book before it hits the shelves and may be featured in an upcoming issue of Read It Forward.

We want to hear your best book group stories! Add a comment below telling us about your favorite book group meeting and enter for the chance to win a Book Group in a Box – a box of great book group books sure to inspire lively discussion. By sharing your story, you’re also entering your group for the chance to be featured in an upcoming issue of Read It Forward.
